The MMSD Observatory is on the property of the Madison Metropolitan School District's School Forest located near the city of Verona, Wisconsin. The observatory consists of a telescope inside a small dome with a shutter that can be opened to give the telescope access to the sky.
The original design was for the observatory to be operated remotely by teachers and students at their school or home computer. Due to technology challenges and funding cut-backs, this plan was never fully realized in a sustainable fashion.
Options are being explored which would provide on-site access to the observatory for groups at the School Forest. For safety and logistical considerations, modifications to the facility will be necessary in order to accommodate on-site use. Since on-going operations of the observatory are not funded, grants and donations will be sought after to accomplish this.
